INDIA Bloc Marches in Delhi Over Voter Roll Deletions
Opposition leaders marched to the Delhi election office to demand the cancellation of electoral roll revisions and the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner.
Leaders of the INDIA opposition bloc marched from Kashmiri Gate to the Delhi election office on Wednesday to protest the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The delegation, comprising representatives from the Congress, TMC, RJD, and Communist parties, submitted a memorandum to Delhi Chief Electoral Officer Ashok Kumar.
The bloc alleges that 47.56 lakh names, representing approximately 32.78% of Delhi's voters, were excluded from the draft roll. They further claim that 33.12 lakh citizens received notices regarding record discrepancies. In addition to demanding the rollback of the SIR and the restoration of voter names, the opposition called for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and a return to paper ballots.
The Election Commission of India defended the process, stating that the SIR allows citizens to establish eligibility and that notices do not automatically lead to deletion. Following the march, police detained Delhi Congress president Devender Yadav and other party workers during a protest at Jantar Mantar.
