TSMC and ASML Dominate Global AI Chip Market
TSMC and ASML maintain a strategic grip on the AI chip market through specialized production capacity and exclusive lithography technology.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company controls an estimated 72.5% of global chip foundry revenue as of the second quarter, serving as the primary manufacturer for major designers including Nvidia and Apple. The company's ability to scale cutting-edge production is so extensive that its competitor, Intel, occasionally utilizes its services to fulfill orders.
This production capacity relies on hardware provided by ASML Holding, which holds the patents and technical expertise for extreme ultraviolet lithography machines. These machines are essential for etching circuitry as small as 2 nanometers, making ASML the sole provider of the hardware required to produce the most advanced semiconductors.
Both companies are positioned for continued revenue growth as global demand for artificial intelligence chips increases. While chip designers like Nvidia farm out nearly all of their advanced fabrication to TSMC, the entire ecosystem remains dependent on the specialized technology provided by ASML.
