Delhi Launches New Sanitation Fleet and Long-Term Waste Plan

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated new sanitation facilities and a waste collection fleet to address Delhi's daily 15,000 tonnes of garbage.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated new Municipal Corporation of Delhi sanitation facilities and a fixed compactor transfer station in Sarita Vihar on Saturday. The initiative introduces a fleet for door-to-door garbage collection across 25 wards in South-East Delhi, including 428 auto tippers, 128 e-rickshaws, and 25 Tata 407 vehicles. As part of the rollout, the government appointed 35 women drivers to operate the vehicles.

To improve street cleanliness, Gupta flagged off the first 50 of 1,000 planned battery-operated mechanical litter pickers intended for deployment across all 250 city wards. These upgrades address a significant processing gap, as the city currently processes only 6,000 to 7,000 tonnes of the approximately 15,000 tonnes of waste generated daily.

The government is developing a 15-to-30-year waste management strategy to prevent further landfill growth and ensure same-day processing. This long-term plan includes the establishment of new waste-to-energy plants, expanded plant capacity, e-waste centers, biogas plants for cow dung, and immersion kiosks for religious materials.
