SoftBank Plans Record $6.3 Billion Retail Bond Sale
SoftBank Group Corp. will launch Japan's largest-ever retail bond sale to fund its massive investment commitments to AI developer OpenAI.
SoftBank Group Corp. plans to launch a ¥1 trillion ($6.3 billion) retail bond sale in Japan, marking the largest offering by any issuer in the country's history. The seven-year bonds are expected to be priced on September 4, with an indicative coupon range between 4.3% and 4.9%.
The conglomerate intends to use the proceeds to fund its investment commitments to OpenAI, to which it has already pledged over $60 billion. As part of this AI expansion, the company is also increasing its data center capacity to meet growing demand. This represents the third retail bond offering for the company this year, following previous sales in April and June.
The fundraising follows a reported quarterly net income of ¥1.83 trillion for the period ending March 31, a result driven by valuation gains from its stake in OpenAI. S&P Global Ratings recently affirmed the company's BB+ credit rating and revised its outlook to stable.
