HSBC Expands India Network to Target Affluent Clients

HSBC is increasing its Indian branch network to 46 cities to become a top five private bank by 2030.

HSBC Holdings Plc is expanding its operations in India to target affluent customers and globally connected citizens. The bank aims to become one of the top four or five private banks in the country by 2030, focusing on wealth management, transaction banking, and its international network for clients with cross-border interests.

To support this growth, the lender plans to increase its branch network from 34 to 46 across 34 cities over the next two years. This expansion includes moving into smaller cities such as Bhubaneswar, Rajkot, Jalandhar, and Mysuru. The strategy places the bank in direct competition with domestic rivals including ICICI Bank Ltd. and Kotak Mahindra Ltd.

HSBC has already established a presence as the largest lender to India's diaspora through a foreign-exchange swap program in GIFT City, which disbursed $10.9 billion in three months. The bank is further deepening ties with wealthy clients through large-ticket mortgages and premium credit cards, noting that its mortgage book has tripled over the last four years.
