Harvard Management Co. Discloses $2.2 Billion SpaceX Stake

Harvard Management Co. revealed a $2.2 billion investment in SpaceX, the largest single stock holding in its US equities portfolio.

The investment arm of Harvard University, Harvard Management Co., disclosed a $2.2 billion stake in Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) in a 13F filing on August 14. This position represents the largest single stock holding within the organization's $4.3 billion US equities portfolio.

The investment has generated significant returns following the record-breaking initial public offering of SpaceX in June. The aerospace company is currently valued at over $1.8 trillion, with shares closing at $140 on Friday, a decrease of 0.9%.

Other academic institutions, including the University of California, the University of North Carolina, and Washington University in St. Louis, have also profited from early investments in the company. The University of California reported a position worth approximately $1 billion.

These financial gains occur as US universities navigate broader financial pressures. Institutions are currently facing challenges stemming from demographic shifts, muted returns from private equity, and threats to federal research funding.
