Earthshot Prize Faces Backlash Over Mumbai Venue Choice
The Earthshot prize is facing criticism for hosting its annual awards ceremony at a venue owned by fossil fuel giant Reliance Industries.
The Earthshot prize, an environmental award founded by Prince William, will hold its annual awards ceremony on November 17 at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai. The selection has sparked criticism from conservationists, including Pro Wildlife and the Wildlife Animal Protection Forum South Africa, because the venue is owned by Reliance Industries. The conglomerate, led by Mukesh Ambani, operates the world's largest oil refinery.
Critics argue the partnership provides prestige to a company tied to fossil fuels and the Vantara zoo. Founded by Anant Ambani, Vantara is currently under scrutiny from Cites, a UN-administered body, regarding the sourcing of its 150,000 animals. While Vantara describes itself as a rescue center, Cites has requested reports from India to investigate potential wildlife trafficking of protected species.
Earthshot prize officials defended the decision, stating the venue was selected for its technical infrastructure. Joanna Swift, the organization's executive director of communications, noted that Mumbai is home to exceptional environmental solutions. Officials further clarified that the organization is paying standard commercial rates for the space rather than entering a philanthropic partnership.
