UCSD Professor Proposes Ethology Framework for AI Study

A University of California San Diego professor argues that AI should be studied as a new species using animal behavior methods rather than computer science.

A professor of psychology at the University of California San Diego proposes that the study of artificial intelligence should shift toward ethology, the scientific study of animal behavior. The author argues that relying solely on computer science or ethics is insufficient for understanding increasingly autonomous systems.

Drawing a parallel to the domestication of dogs, the author suggests that while AI is engineered to communicate in human-like ways, this creates a false illusion of shared cognitive architecture. The narrative posits that large language models operate on computations that do not mirror human thought, similar to how dogs possess a sensory and cognitive world radically different from that of humans despite their social sensitivity.

To better understand and contain these systems, the author proposes applying the four core questions of behavior developed by Nobel laureate Nikolaas Tinbergen. This framework focuses on mechanism, development, purpose, and comparative analysis to treat AI as if it were an entirely new species.
