India Approves Bill Penalizing Insults to National Song

The Union Cabinet approved a bill granting Vande Mataram legal protections equal to the national anthem, making its disruption a punishable offense.

The Union Cabinet of India approved the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, which elevates the legal status of the national song, Vande Mataram, to match that of the national anthem, Jana Gana Mana. The legislation makes the deliberate insult or obstruction of the song a punishable offense, carrying penalties of up to three years in prison, a fine, or both.

The government intends to introduce the bill during the Monsoon Session of Parliament starting July 20. This move follows Ministry of Home Affairs guidelines that mandate the performance of the song at official events where the anthem is played. The Bharatiya Janata Party argues that previous governments failed to provide the song due recognition by accommodating objections regarding its Hindu imagery.

The proposal has created a political divide. BJP and NDA leaders describe the bill as a necessary step to protect an immortal creation. In contrast, opposition leaders from the Indian National Congress, CPI, and Samajwadi Party characterize the bill as a frivolous attempt to polarize voters and undermine the country's secular ethos, claiming that existing laws are already sufficient to protect national honors.
