Fiber-Optic Companies Surge as AI Infrastructure Demand Grows
Industrial telecommunications and networking firms are seeing a market resurgence as fiber-optic technology becomes essential for connecting artificial intelligence data centers.
Industrial telecommunications and networking companies are experiencing a financial resurgence as fiber-optic technology becomes the primary infrastructure for artificial intelligence buildouts. This growth is driven by the requirement to connect hyperscaler data-center campuses, shifting the focus away from traditional internet exchange points.
Cisco Systems saw its stock surpass its March 2000 high in December 2025, while Corning Inc. returned to a $100 billion market capitalization in February 2026. To support this expansion, Nvidia invested $4 billion into optical suppliers Lumentum Holdings and Coherent to increase laser capacity.
Lumen Technologies has capitalized on fiber capacity laid decades ago, securing $13 billion in deals with cloud providers including Microsoft, Meta Platforms, Amazon Web Services, and Google Cloud. Chris Stansbury, CFO of Lumen Technologies, attributed this success to a strategic bet made 25 years ago.
Market reactions to the trend are divided. Some analysts view the growth as a durable financial recovery, while others argue that companies once seen as dot-com bubble poster children are simply attempting to claim relevance in a new bubble after missing the initial transition to cloud computing.
