Amazon Web Services Acquires DuckLabs to Scale DuckDB

Amazon Web Services will acquire DuckLabs, the company behind the DuckDB in-process OLAP database, in early September 2026. The acquisition brings a team of over 30 people into the cloud provider's fold, though the group will remain based in Amsterdam to continue developing DuckDB, DuckLake, and Quack.

Despite the change in ownership, the components of the Duck Stack will remain free and open source under the MIT license. The nonprofit DuckDB Foundation will continue to steward these projects to ensure their independence. DuckLabs founders noted that joining the cloud giant provides the resources and scale required to support a user base that currently generates over one million daily downloads.

AWS intends to use these technologies to power a new generation of data services. Planned expansions include opening the extension stack to third-party developers and establishing a technical advisory board within the DuckDB Foundation.
