India Urges Global Support for Sustainable Development Goals
The Government of India called on the international community to increase funding and technology transfer to achieve Sustainable Development Goals and eradicate poverty.
The Government of India urged the international community on October 13 to strengthen global resources and execution mechanisms to achieve Sustainable Development Goals, focusing primarily on poverty eradication. During the UN Second Committee General Discussion on Sustainable Development in New York, Counsellor Soumya Nair emphasized that developing nations require increased finance, technology transfer, and capacity-building to meet these targets.
Nair reported that non-fossil sources now account for 55% of India's installed electricity generation capacity. As part of its commitment to global cooperation, India offered to host the Fourth UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in 2030.
In a related diplomatic effort, Secretary Sibi George of the Ministry of External Affairs welcomed the UN Declaration on Sea Level Rise during the 81st UN General Assembly. George advocated for the legal continuity of statehood for vulnerable island and coastal nations and called for enhanced coastal resilience.
