FAA Approves $155 Million Tampa Airport Tower Replacement

The Federal Aviation Administration approved a $155 million plan to replace the air traffic control tower at Tampa International Airport. The current tower, built in July 1972, is one of the oldest operational facilities in the United States. As part of the investment, the agency is allocating $18 million specifically for upgraded radar systems and controller displays.

Transportation officials expect the new facility and technology to reduce flight cancellations and delays. Planners are currently using drones to identify a construction site that provides an unobstructed view of the airfield. While a start date has not been announced, the project is expected to take several years and will run concurrently with the completion of the airport's new Airside D terminal.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy advocated for the project, stating that the agency wants to provide controllers with additional tools to alleviate the pressure of their roles, which he described as stressful and difficult.
