Cochin Shipyard Delivers INS Mangrol to Indian Navy
Cochin Shipyard Limited delivered the INS Mangrol, an indigenous anti-submarine warfare vessel, to the Indian Navy to enhance coastal surveillance and underwater threat detection.
The Indian Navy received the INS Mangrol on August 22, 2026, marking the delivery of the third of eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) in the Mahe-class. Built by Cochin Shipyard Limited in Kochi, the vessel is designed to detect, track, and engage underwater threats in shallow coastal waters where larger warships are limited. The delivery was formalized through a protocol signed by Cochin Shipyard Director of Operations Dr. Harikrishnan S and Commanding Officer Designate Commander U Sharan Kumar.
The vessel features over 80 percent indigenous content, aligning with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative to reduce reliance on foreign defense suppliers. The INS Mangrol is equipped with waterjet propulsion for high maneuverability, an RBU-6000 anti-submarine rocket launcher, 324 mm lightweight torpedo tubes, and advanced sonar systems for underwater surveillance and mine warfare.
Named after a coastal town in Gujarat's Junagadh district, the ship continues the legacy of a previous naval minesweeper of the same name that served until 2004. The Ministry of Defense stated that the acquisition supports India's broader objective to expand domestic defense manufacturing and strengthen maritime readiness along the national coastline.
