Mayor Zohran Mamdani Sidesteps Questions on Wealth Tax Campaign

Zohran Mamdani, the Mayor of New York City, declined to confirm reports that he intends to launch a public pressure campaign this fall to increase taxes on corporations and wealthy New Yorkers. The proposed initiative would revive plans to raise the personal income tax rate for filers earning $1 million or more, a move Mamdani projected could generate $3 billion annually.

During a Fox 5 New York interview on August 7, 2026, Mamdani sidestepped questions regarding the timing of the campaign and the potential involvement of the Democratic Socialists of America. He stated that discussions regarding actions after the November election are a "conversation for what comes after November," noting that his current focus is on heat wave safety and school preparations.

Governor Kathy Hochul previously rejected these specific tax hikes in early 2026. However, Hochul and Mamdani jointly implemented a pied-à-terre tax on high-value second homes in May 2026, which is expected to raise $500 million annually.
