Micron Reports Record Earnings Amid AI-Driven Market Volatility

Micron Technology reported record fiscal fourth-quarter earnings while shifting toward long-term supply agreements to counter memory stock selloffs and competition.

Micron Technology reported record fiscal fourth-quarter earnings and improved long-term demand visibility, though the company subsequently led a selloff in memory stocks. Investors expressed concerns over the sustainability of AI infrastructure spending and the increasing reliance of hyperscalers on debt financing. This volatility coincided with a tepid earnings outlook from Japanese peer Kioxia, suggesting a potential moderation in storage pricing and demand.

During the September 30 earnings call, CEO Sanjay Mehrotra stated that "super intelligence" is creating the most compelling opportunity in the company's history. To move away from the historically cyclical commodity memory business, the company is prioritizing product quality and technological leadership. Micron argues that high bandwidth memory, conventional DRAM, and NAND-based storage are now critical differentiators for AI platforms by enhancing power efficiency and data access speeds.

To protect margins and return on investment, Micron is implementing Strategic Customer Agreements to lock in price floors and volumes, including increased take-or-pay requirements. These measures aim to mitigate cyclical pressures and competition from Samsung and SK Hynix, both of which are expanding production capacity in ways that could eventually create a market surplus.
