S&P 500 Hits Record Close on AI Energy Surge
The S&P 500 reached a record close of 7818.93 as AI investments and nuclear power deals drove gains despite high oil prices.
The S&P 500 reached a new record close of 7818.93 on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, after hitting an intraday peak of 7,844.52. The Nasdaq Composite also achieved an all-time closing high. This rally was primarily driven by renewed momentum in artificial intelligence investments and a stabilization of oil prices following a Group of Seven agreement to release emergency diesel and crude stockpiles to mitigate inflation fears linked to the Iran war.
Energy stocks surged as AI infrastructure demands increased the need for nuclear power. Constellation Energy shares jumped over 12% after Alphabet Inc. agreed to a 3,590-megawatt power deal to expand nuclear capacity on the PJM electric grid. GE Vernova shares rose over 5%, while Vistra Corp received a conditional loan commitment of up to $4.2 billion from the U.S. Department of Energy.
Other major corporate actions included Uber Technologies agreeing to acquire EzCater for $2.3 billion and McKesson Corporation partnering with Clayton, Dubilier & Rice to buy Option Care Health for approximately $5.8 billion. Becton Dickinson agreed to invest $19 billion in the U.S. to avoid future tariffs. Meanwhile, Nvidia Corporation continued to push the index upward, reaching a market valuation of $5.5 trillion.
These gains occurred despite macroeconomic pressures, including 10-year Treasury yields trading near two-decade highs of 5.27 percent and Brent crude hovering around $100 a barrel. However, market participants now see a lower probability that the U.S. Federal Reserve will implement a second consecutive rate hike this month.
