Governor Ned Lamont Wins Democratic Primary for Third Term

Governor Ned Lamont won the Democratic primary on Tuesday, securing the nomination for a third term. He defeated Josh Elliott, the deputy speaker of the state House of Representatives, who ran on a progressive platform focused on increasing taxes for wealthy residents. This contest marked the first time in nearly 50 years that a sitting Connecticut governor faced a primary challenge.

Lamont campaigned on his record of eliminating fiscal deficits and cutting taxes for middle-income residents. To support his bid, he invested 9.5 million dollars of his own funds into the race, though both candidates raised similar amounts from individual donors.

Lamont will face Republican state senator Ryan Fazio in the November general election. Fazio became the Republican nominee in May following the withdrawal of rival Erin Stewart. If elected, Lamont would become one of the longest-serving governors in the state's history, as only one other governor has been elected to a third term in the last 200 years.

The primary cycle also included a challenge to U.S. Representative John Larson in the 1st Congressional District, where he faced former Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin, Hartford Board of Education member Ruth Fortune, and State Representative Jillian Gilchrest. Additionally, all 36 state Senate and 151 state House seats were up for election, with Democrats currently holding two-to-one majorities in both chambers.
