Prabowo Subianto Nominates Destry Damayanti to Lead Bank Indonesia

President Prabowo Subianto nominated Destry Damayanti as the sole candidate to lead Bank Indonesia. State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi announced the nomination in Jakarta on Monday, filling a leadership void left by Governor Perry Warjiyo, who resigned in late July for personal reasons.

Damayanti has served as senior deputy governor since 2019 and has held the role of acting governor since Warjiyo's departure. To secure the permanent position, she must now undergo a fit-and-proper test conducted by parliament. While the legislative process generally spans several weeks, parliament is required to approve or reject the candidate within one month.

Market analysts describe the appointment as a critical test for the government. They indicate that the perceived independence of the central bank's leadership will be the primary factor in maintaining investor confidence during this transition.
