Albanese Government Launches National AI Strategy for Security

The Albanese government has introduced a comprehensive AI strategy designed to strengthen national security, defense capabilities, and resilience against AI-driven influence operations. Central to this initiative is the creation of an Office of AI within the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. The government is also developing mandatory national Australian Standards for AI, which are slated to reach Parliament in early 2027, alongside new regulations for data centers and copyright protections.

While the administration relies on the 2023-2030 Cyber Security Strategy and the Security of Critical Infrastructure Act as a foundation, critics warn that AI has fundamentally accelerated the tempo of cyberattacks. Adversaries are now utilizing AI to automate reconnaissance and generate adaptive malware, which has reduced the detection window for threats from days to minutes.

In response to these evolving threats, the government is working with Five Eyes partners to counter AI-generated propaganda and disinformation. There are ongoing calls for Australia to pivot its defensive posture toward real-time detection and automated intelligence sharing to safeguard essential services, including financial systems and energy grids.
