Extreme Heat Risks 800 Billion Euros in European Losses

Extreme heat and wildfires are causing severe economic disruption across Europe, with Allianz SE estimating potential losses of 800 billion euros. France faces the highest risk, with approximately 211 billion euros in economic output at risk through 2030, followed by Italy, Germany, and Spain.

Temperatures exceeding 40°C have devastated the agriculture and construction sectors, where productivity drops once heat surpasses 30°C. On the Iberian Peninsula, olive oil yields could decline by up to 28 percent. The weather crisis has forced over 300,000 people to evacuate in France and Spain, where wildfires have burned more than 42,000 and 80,000 hectares respectively.

The European Environment Agency warns that heat stress is a structural hazard with significant macroeconomic and fiscal implications. These conditions challenge the European Union's efforts to balance industrial competitiveness with the European Green Deal. The World Health Organization has characterized the phenomenon as a silent killer.
