Australian Tourism and Construction Job Ads Surge Amid Migration Cuts

Australian hospitality and construction businesses are aggressively hiring as they face skilled labor shortages and looming government restrictions on migration.

Job advertisements in Australia's tourism and construction sectors have surged as businesses prepare for a tightening labor market and anticipated government cuts to migration. Hospitality and tourism job ads rose 3.6% in August, while construction job ads grew 10.7% over the year. The residential construction sector specifically reports a shortage of 83,000 skilled workers.

Tony Burke, the Home Affairs Minister, is scheduled to announce sweeping changes to migration settings at the National Press Club this Thursday. Industry leaders argue that businesses are already suffering due to a July freeze on working-holiday-maker visas. The Australian Restaurant and Cafe Association characterized this freeze as "policy by stealth," noting that open positions on Seek have jumped from the mid-40,000s to the mid-60,000s in a single month.

Seek Chief Economist Blair Chapman noted that firms are front-loading hiring to prepare for the summer event season and Black Friday sales. While the Housing Industry Association emphasized that the solution requires more people completing trade careers rather than shifting workers between sectors, hospitality groups warn that current policy has cut the food service industry "off at the knees" ahead of the peak tourism season.
