Ireland Reports 231% Surge in August Home Construction

The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage reported that 3,880 new homes began construction in August 2026, representing a 231% increase over August 2025. Total home commencements for the year reached 22,854, a substantial rise from the 8,711 starts recorded during the same period in 2025.

Supporting this trend, data from the Central Statistics Office showed a 60% increase in dwelling units approved for planning in the second quarter of 2026. The 11,912 approved units mark the highest level of planning permissions since the fourth quarter of 2021.

Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage James Browne stated that the momentum in new home starts reflects positive changes made to create an enabling environment for building. He noted that while final completions are the real measure of delivery, commencement rates and planning permissions indicate a sustainable pipeline for future housing.
