Bernie Sanders Campaigns for Abdul El-Sayed in Rural Michigan

U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders campaigned in Alpena, Michigan, to support Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed ahead of the November 3 election. Sanders drew approximately 700 people in a traditionally Republican stronghold, part of a broader Democratic strategy to narrow GOP margins in northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula.
El-Sayed is utilizing a "Michigan first" campaign to appeal to non-college-educated white voters and disillusioned citizens. To counter high-spending outside groups, Sanders and other members of Congress committed over $1.3 million to the campaign. Sanders noted that rural communities often do not receive the attention they deserve and stated that El-Sayed is "taking on everybody."
Republican U.S. Senate nominee Mike Rogers is simultaneously attempting to narrow Democratic margins by courting residents of Detroit and Jewish voters. The Michigan Republican Party has criticized the progressive policies of Sanders and El-Sayed, characterizing them as threats to the livelihoods of state residents.
