South Carolina Announces Annual Sales Tax Holiday for August
South Carolina will waive state and local sales taxes on eligible back-to-school and home items from August 7 to August 9.
South Carolina will hold its annual Tax Free Weekend, also known as the Sales Tax Holiday, from August 7 to August 9. During this period, the state and local governments waive sales taxes on a specific range of eligible goods, including clothing, footwear, school supplies, computers, and bed and bath items. The exemption applies to both new and used products purchased through online and physical retailers, though computer accessories are only exempt when bundled with a computer purchase. Certain categories, such as cosmetics, furniture, cellphones, and sports equipment, remain taxable.
Krista Hinson, Executive Director of the South Carolina Retail Association, noted that the event helps families manage budgets while providing a significant boost to local businesses. The program was established by the state legislature in 2000 and has grown into a major retail event. In 2025, shoppers spent over $25 million on eligible goods, which resulted in more than $1.5 million in total tax savings for consumers.
