Seth Moulton Challenges Ed Markey in Massachusetts Democratic Primary

Massachusetts voters cast ballots Tuesday in a Democratic primary that features a generational clash between 80-year-old incumbent Senator Ed Markey and 47-year-old Representative Seth Moulton. Moulton, a moderate and Marine Corps veteran, argues that the party is stuck in the status quo and that a new generation is required to lead on modern issues such as artificial intelligence. Markey, a progressive supported by Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, has countered by labeling Moulton's agenda as "backwards-looking" and citing his own work on AI safeguards, including the Youth AI Privacy Act.

University of New Hampshire polling shows Markey leading Moulton 63% to 28%. Because Massachusetts is heavily Democratic, the primary winner is expected to secure the seat in the November general election. The race has been marked by disputes over policy, including Moulton's opposition to Medicare for All and his past comments regarding transgender athletes.

Other consequential primaries are occurring across the state. Moderate Representative Stephen Lynch faces a challenge from the left by attorney Patrick Roath, while Representative Richard Neal is being challenged by Jeromie Whalen. Additionally, a five-way primary to replace Moulton in the House features former White House aide Dan Koh, backed by Joseph Biden and Kamala Harris, and state legislator Tram Nguyen. Republican voters are also selecting a gubernatorial nominee between Mike Minogue and Brian Shortsleeve to challenge Governor Maura Healey.
