Nigerian Opposition Parties Meet INEC Candidate Correction Deadline

The Independent National Electoral Commission is processing candidate list corrections after several opposition parties met an October 24 deadline for the 2027 general elections.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is currently managing corrections to candidate lists ahead of the 2027 general elections. Several opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), and Action Democratic Party (ADP), reported meeting an October 24 deadline to rectify the omission of candidates from official published lists.

The omissions specifically affected governorship candidates in Gombe and Ogun states, as well as several House of Assembly candidates. Umar Bature, the PDP's National Organising Secretary, confirmed the party completed the necessary corrections within the timeframe to ensure candidate inclusion. While party leaders have confirmed compliance, INEC has not yet released a final status update on all candidates, with officials expecting to provide clarifications later this week.

Parallel to these administrative tasks, the commission faces scrutiny over its institutional independence. Critics have raised concerns regarding recent appointments and postings within the organization, arguing that INEC must demonstrate impartiality to restore public confidence in Nigeria's democratic institutions before the upcoming watershed elections.
