China Approaches High-Income Status While Rejecting Developed Label

China is projected to enter the World Bank high-income category for 2026 but continues to identify as a developing nation to maintain Global South influence.

The Government of China is projected to enter the World Bank high-income category for 2026 as its gross national income per capita nears the $14,554 threshold. Despite this economic growth, Beijing continues to reject the label of a developed nation, positioning itself as a champion of the Global South to preserve influence across Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

This strategic designation allows China to avoid certain contributions to global climate funds and retain specific advantages within international organizations. While the World Trade Organization permits self-designation, China has stated it will not seek special treatment for implementing agreements based on its developing status.

Parallel to these classification shifts, the World Bank Group is reducing its financial engagement with the country. Annual lending has already dropped from $2.4 billion in 2017 to $750 million in 2025, with the institution planning to phase out loans to China entirely by 2031.
