Google Launches Private AI-Generated App Publishing on Play Store
Google now allows US users to create and publish private Android apps using natural language prompts via Google AI Studio without a paid developer account.
Google announced on Tuesday a new feature enabling users in the United States, aged 18 and older, to publish personal, privately listed Android apps on the Play Store. These apps, described as vibe-coded, are created using natural language prompts through Google AI Studio. Unlike traditional public apps, these creations are not searchable and remain separate from the public store catalog.
Users can launch these apps using a standard Google account, removing the requirement for a paid developer account. While the apps must comply with existing Google Play policies, the company intends for the feature to serve as an on-ramp for new developers to eventually transition to professional accounts. Google plans to add a sharing feature for trusted friends in the coming months.
Alongside the private publishing tool, the company introduced several other Play Store updates. These include Game Finder, a personalized AI game recommendation engine, and enhanced comparison capabilities for the Ask Play AI assistant. Google also released new parental age-range sharing tools. Sam Bright, Vice President and General Manager of Google Play and Developer Ecosystem, stated that the shift moves the platform from a general app repository to a more personalized experience.
