Hong Kong Work Visas Double as Foreign Talent Influx Grows
Hong Kong granted over 31,000 work visas last year as foreign professionals and entrepreneurs flock to the city for finance, science, and technology roles.
Hong Kong is seeing a significant surge in foreign entrepreneurs and expatriates, with the city granting 31,278 work visas to foreign nationals last year—more than double the volume recorded five years ago. This growth is driven by a regional push into science and technology, as well as the city's connectivity to Asia-Pacific capital markets.
Financial institutions including HSBC, Standard Chartered, UBS, and Legal & General are expanding their hiring and regional presence to capitalize on wealth management and capital market growth. Beyond traditional finance, the city's integration into the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area is attracting fintech and medical technology founders. These entrepreneurs cite intellectual property protection, research talent, and access to the Chinese mainland market as primary drivers for establishing innovation hubs in the city.
The influx of global talent has directly impacted the local economy. New non-Chinese tenants have increased by 30 percent, contributing to rental price hikes of 5 to 8 percent in popular residential areas. Survey data indicates that 74 percent of wealthy expatriates intend to remain in the city for at least eight years, citing security, low taxes, and high-quality healthcare and education systems.
