UN Experts Warn of Unprecedented Israeli Settler Violence
United Nations experts report that Israeli-backed settler violence reached unprecedented levels in 2026, causing at least 13 deaths and facilitating forced Palestinian displacement.
Fourteen independent United Nations experts and Special Rapporteurs issued a warning on June 1, 2026, regarding escalating settler violence and forced displacement in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem. The experts report that settler brutality reached unprecedented levels during the first five months of 2026, resulting in at least 13 Palestinian deaths and nearly 500 injuries.
The violence is concentrated in Area C of the West Bank, specifically within the Jordan Valley and the South Hebron Hills. The report identifies the village of Umm al-Kheir as a primary site of attacks, infrastructure destruction, and the killing of a human rights defender. UN experts characterize these attacks as a calculated tool of coercion used to facilitate ethnic cleansing and settlement expansion over 663 square kilometers of land.
According to the experts, the Government of Israel supports or tolerates this activity through financial, military, and legislative means. They specifically highlighted risks to communities in Masafer Yatta and Khan al-Ahmar, who face imminent demolition and forcible transfer. The UN experts urged the Israeli government to halt its support for settlements and outposts, ensure accountability for attacks under the Geneva Conventions, and allow displaced residents to return to their homes.
