Latino Voters Swing 21 Points Toward Democrats in Midterms

Latino voters shifted significantly toward Democratic candidates in the 2026 midterms, driving historic turnout and helping Democrats retake control of Congress.

Latino voters shifted their support toward the Democratic Party during the 2026 midterm elections, swinging 21 points toward Democrats according to exit polls. This movement contributed to a blue wave that helped Democrats retake control of Congress and secure key victories in Hispanic-majority districts. In Texas, the shift aided the wins of Governor-elect Gina Hinojosa, Senator-elect James Talarico, and the re-election of Representative Henry Cuellar. In Arizona, the trend likely gave Democrats control of the state legislature for the first time in generations.

Nationwide, Latino turnout reached historic levels with an estimated 14.5 million Hispanics casting ballots, including a surge of first-time voters and those under 30. In Colorado, approximately 67% of Latino voters supported Democratic congressional candidates, leading to the election of Manny Rutinel over Republican incumbent Gabe Evans.

Voters cited economic pressures—including inflation, food and housing costs—and concerns over immigration overreach as primary drivers. The shift follows a 2024 trend where Latino support for Donald Trump had increased to nearly half of the demographic. Community leaders noted that aggressive deportation policies under the Trump administration fostered deep fear and resentment. Republican strategist Jaime Molera suggested the GOP must end the war in Iran, stop tariffs, and soften its tone on immigration to regain the trust of Latino voters.
