Google and Amazon Launch AI Agents for Automated Shopping
Google, Amazon, and OpenAI are deploying AI-powered shopping agents to automate product discovery, price monitoring, and direct purchasing for consumers.
Competition is intensifying between Google, Amazon, and OpenAI as they integrate AI-powered shopping tools to capture the growing market of AI-driven commerce. Google recently introduced an AI agent capable of calling local stores to verify product pricing and availability, alongside an agentic checkout tool that automatically executes purchases when items reach a user-specified price.
Google is also providing new tools for marketers to adapt to a shrinking search funnel, as users increasingly employ longer and more specific queries. Amazon continues to scale its Rufus assistant, with CEO Andy Jassy reporting a 210% year-over-year increase in interactions. Meanwhile, OpenAI has partnered with Walmart and Etsy to enable direct purchases within the ChatGPT interface.
This shift toward autonomous commerce has created friction between industry players. Amazon issued a cease-and-desist letter to AI startup Perplexity after its Comet browser enabled AI agents to perform shopping tasks on the Amazon platform.
