Billionaires Spend $2.8 Billion in 2026 Midterm Elections

Ultra-wealthy donors contributed record sums to the 2026 midterms, though Democrats secured majorities in the House and Senate despite heavy Republican funding.

The 2026 U.S. midterm elections saw unprecedented financial influence from ultra-wealthy donors, with the 50 largest contributors providing nearly $2.8 billion. Elon Musk emerged as the largest individual funder, spending approximately $445 million through vehicles including America PAC to support Republican candidates. Other major GOP contributors included Richard and Elizabeth Uihlein, who gave over $140 million, and Jeff Yass, who contributed roughly $110 million.

Analysis from the Brennan Center for Justice and OpenSecrets.org indicates a significant shift in donor loyalty toward the GOP, with Republican-aligned donors contributing more than three times the amount of Democratic donors. Cryptocurrency industry donors notably replaced labor unions among the top 40 contributors. On the Democratic side, major spending came from the Majority Forward super PAC and donors such as George and Alexander Soros, Michael Bloomberg, and Reid Hoffman.

Despite the historic scale of Republican funding, the Democratic Party secured majorities in both the House and Senate and captured a majority of governorships for the first time in 16 years. Some of Musk's backed candidates failed to win, including Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who lost his Senate race to Democrat James Talarico. Legal experts suggest the scale of this spending demonstrates a collapse of campaign finance law and grants billionaires outsized influence over the political process.
