NZ Post Returns to Profit with $17 Million Net Gain
NZ Post reported a $17 million net profit for the 2026 fiscal year, marking its first profitable year since 2023.
NZ Post reported a net profit of $17 million for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2026, marking its first return to profitability since 2023. The result represents a $19 million improvement over the previous year's $2 million loss, with group revenue rising 3.6% to approximately $1.26 billion. As a result of the recovery, the state-owned enterprise will return a $12.5 million dividend to the Crown to support public services.
The turnaround follows a multi-year transformation strategy centered on cost management and operational efficiency. Key initiatives included investments in automated parcel processing and the October 2025 opening of the Auckland Central Depot. To further reduce expenses, the company restructured its retail network by removing services from 132 urban retail partner stores, a move enabled by changes to its Deed of Understanding with the government.
Despite the profit, the company faces structural challenges as mail volumes continue to decline. Letter deliveries fell 15.1% to 134 million, and parcel deliveries decreased to 85 million. Minister for State-Owned Enterprises Simeon Brown welcomed the performance but noted that parcel revenue must improve to remain competitive. The company's return on equity of 2.9% remains below its cost of capital.
