Christine Lagarde Rules Out 2027 French Presidential Bid

European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde ruled out a bid for the 2027 French presidential election in an interview with the newspaper La Croix. Lagarde stated that running for office "would not be a good idea at all," citing her age and the energy required for the role.

While she confirmed she will remain in her current position into 2027, she noted she does not rule out leaving the ECB a few months before her term officially ends in October 2027. She clarified that such an early departure "won’t be world-changing."

Lagarde also characterized France's financial situation as "dangerous," noting that national debt is approaching 120% of GDP. She called for collective determination and reforms to the bureaucracy, labor market, and pension system to restore confidence. These remarks follow the recent resignation of ECB board member Isabel Schnabel, who left the bank to join the International Monetary Fund.
