Tiger Global Gains From OpenAI Valuation Surge

Tiger Global Management is seeing massive returns across its funds following an early 2021 investment in OpenAI.

Tiger Global Management is realizing significant gains across its hedge fund, crossover fund, and private investment vehicles due to an early investment in OpenAI. The firm entered its position in 2021 when OpenAI was valued at $15.7 billion; the company's valuation has since climbed to $1.4 trillion.

This bet, combined with investments in Waymo and Anthropic, has driven strong performance for the firm. Specifically, Tiger Global's private investment fund 16 reported a 44% increase net of fees. The initial investment occurred after Sam Altman invited Chase Coleman to invest in the artificial intelligence company.

Following a period of volatility in private markets after 2021, the firm has shifted toward a more concentrated investment strategy. This change is reflected in the size of its latest venture capital fund, PIP 16, which was raised at $2.2 billion, marking the smallest fund the firm has raised in several years.
