Fed Vice Chair Michelle Bowman Cautions Against Immediate Rate Hikes

Federal Reserve Vice Chair Michelle Bowman stated there is no immediate urgency for further monetary policy action despite inflation remaining above target.

Federal Reserve Vice Chair of Supervision Michelle Bowman stated that the central bank has time to monitor evolving financial conditions before taking further monetary policy action. Speaking at the Institute of International Finance Annual Membership Summit in Bangkok on Wednesday, Bowman noted that while inflation remains above the Federal Reserve's goal, there is no immediate urgency for additional rate hikes following the most recent increase.

Bowman also criticized specific financial regulations implemented after the 2008 financial crisis, arguing that these rules restrained economic growth by pushing activity out of the formal financial system. She described herself as a pragmatist and urged a forward-looking approach to industry regulation.

Addressing emerging technology, Bowman highlighted the cybersecurity risks that frontier artificial intelligence models pose to critical infrastructure. She further emphasized the need for careful oversight regarding the funding of data center construction to ensure sufficient capital is maintained.
