Nigeria and Netherlands Sign Trade Facilitation Declaration in Brussels

Nigeria Customs Service and Netherlands Customs signed a joint declaration in Brussels to enhance border security and combat transnational organized crime.

The Nigeria Customs Service and the Customs Administration of the Kingdom of the Netherlands signed a Joint Declaration on June 24, 2026, in Brussels. The agreement establishes a formal framework for deepening customs cooperation, enhancing border security, and combating transnational organized crime.

The pact prioritizes intelligence sharing, customs modernization, and the securing of international supply chains. These measures specifically target the trafficking of weapons, narcotic drugs, counterfeit goods, and wildlife products. By focusing on capacity building and joint work plans, both administrations aim to balance rigorous security enforcement and the disruption of criminal networks with the maintenance of efficient, transparent cargo clearance systems for legitimate trade.

This agreement follows a series of high-level bilateral engagements, including a visit to the Netherlands in October 2025 and a Dutch delegation visit to Nigeria in March 2026. Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi and Director-General Nanette van Schelven emphasized that the partnership is essential for addressing the vulnerabilities of an interconnected global trading environment.

The collaboration intends to leverage mutual learning to tackle shared challenges in border management. By aligning their enforcement strategies, the two nations seek to reduce the flow of illicit goods while streamlining the movement of legal commerce across their respective borders.
