Mali Releases 82 Soldiers and Pardons French National

Separatists in northern Mali released 82 soldiers on Thursday, August 13, 2026. The captives were taken during coordinated nationwide attacks on April 25 that targeted Bamako, the garrison town of Kati, and several northern and central cities. Mohamed Elmaouloud Ramadane of the Azawad Liberation Front stated the release was on humanitarian grounds, though he noted that approximately 118 Malian soldiers remain in captivity. The April offensive was conducted by an alliance of Tuareg separatists and JNIM, militants affiliated with al-Qaida and the Islamic State.

On the same day, President Assimi Goïta pardoned Yann Vézilier, a French intelligence agent and former embassy official. Vézilier had been sentenced in June to 20 years in prison for spying and conspiring with Malian officers to destabilize the military-led government in a coup plot. France had previously maintained that the charges against Vézilier were without merit.

The Malian government characterized the pardon as a reflection of ancestral values of forgiveness and hospitality. However, officials specified that the clemency does not negate the facts established during the trial and is contingent upon Vézilier's immediate removal from national territory. The gesture occurs amid strained relations between Mali and France, as Mali has shifted its diplomatic focus toward Russia and France has suspended counter-terrorism cooperation.
