India Rejects China's Renaming of Arunachal Pradesh Locations

The Ministry of External Affairs of India categorically rejected recent attempts by China to assign standardized names to locations within the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal described these efforts as mischievous attempts to manufacture baseless narratives and stated that such actions cannot alter the reality that the region remains an integral and inalienable part of India.

This move marks the sixth such renaming exercise by Beijing since 2017, with a total of 89 locations renamed to date. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China defended the action, with spokesperson Guo Jiakun asserting that it is fully within China's sovereign rights to issue names for places in the region, which China refers to as Zangnan. Guo further stated that China does not recognize Arunachal Pradesh, describing it as illegally set up by India.

New Delhi characterized these naming exercises and China's recent administrative restructuring in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region—including the creation of Cenling, Hean, and Hekang counties—as cartographic aggression. Indian officials warned that these unilateral actions inject negativity into bilateral relations and detract from efforts to normalize ties following the 2020 eastern Ladakh border row. While Beijing maintains that its commitment to improving relations remains unchanged and that ties are generally stable, India maintains that such moves undermine diplomatic stability.
