IAEA Completes First Nuclear Security Review Mission in Pakistan

The International Atomic Energy Agency concluded its first physical protection advisory mission in Pakistan, describing the country's nuclear security regime as robust.

The International Atomic Energy Agency concluded its first International Physical Protection Advisory Service mission to Pakistan on October 9, 2026. A seven-member team led by Khammar Mrabit reviewed the country's legislative and regulatory frameworks for nuclear security between September 28 and October 9.

As part of the assessment, the team visited the KANUPP Decommissioning Project at the Karachi Nuclear Power Generating Station to evaluate spent-fuel storage and physical protection measures. The mission, which included experts from Russia, Romania, Slovakia, and China, was hosted by the Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority.

The agency characterized Pakistan's nuclear security regime as robust and appropriately implemented, though it provided recommendations to further strengthen existing procedures. Zia Hussain Shah, Chairman of the Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority, stated that the findings establish a baseline for improving legal and regulatory frameworks.
