Papua New Guinea Orders Closure of Taiwan Representative Office

The government of Papua New Guinea ordered the immediate closure of the Taipei Economic Office in Port Moresby to reaffirm its commitment to the one-China policy. Foreign Minister Justin Tkatchenko described the move as an administrative alignment and a vital step toward deepening trust with Beijing. The decision follows the implementation of the Pukpuk Treaty, a defense alliance with Australia, leading to suggestions that the closure serves as economic reassurance to China.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China praised the decision, stating it reflects the international community's aspiration to adhere to the one-China principle. Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs lodged a formal protest, asserting that the closure was a unilateral decision made without prior consultation. Taiwanese officials stated that the representative office would continue to operate normally to safeguard national interests and serve its citizens.

International reactions have been divided. The United States Department of State characterized the closure as part of a Beijing intimidation campaign designed to undermine countries that partner with Taiwan. Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim described the move as a diplomatic setback. New Zealand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade indicated it is seeking further information regarding the announcement.
