UK and EU Remove Gibraltar-Spain Border Fence

The United Kingdom and European Union dismantled the historic border fence between Gibraltar and Spain on July 15 to allow freedom of movement.

The United Kingdom and the European Union signed a treaty in Brussels on July 14, 2026, to remove all physical barriers and routine land border controls between Gibraltar and Spain. Effective at midnight on July 15, the agreement dismantled a frontier fence dating back to 1908, integrating the British Overseas Territory into the Schengen free travel area and aligning it with the EU customs union.

The deal facilitates the daily movement of approximately 15,000 cross-border workers and aims to boost economic activity in the Spanish border town of La Línea de la Concepción. To replace physical checkpoints, Gibraltar implemented a digital fortress featuring live facial recognition cameras and increased police and customs presence. Travelers arriving at Gibraltar's port and airport from non-Schengen countries now undergo joint biometric passport checks conducted by British and Spanish officials.

Financial adjustments include a new transaction tax in Gibraltar, starting at 15% and eventually rising to 17%, to replace previous import duties. Additionally, the Government of Spain gained a veto over the granting of residency permits in the territory. While officials described the move as a step toward shared prosperity, the treaty does not resolve the long-standing dispute over Gibraltar's sovereignty. The agreement is currently under provisional application pending final approval from the UK and European Parliaments.
