Chinese Yuan Hits Strongest Level Since 2022

The Chinese yuan reached its strongest level against the U.S. dollar since July 2022, climbing to 6.6967 per dollar on Friday. The currency is currently on track for its seventh consecutive quarterly gain and stands as one of the top-performing currencies in Asia this year.

This rally is driven by robust Chinese export strength and a series of supportive actions by the People's Bank of China. The central bank strengthened its daily currency fixing for eight consecutive sessions, the longest such streak since 2023. This appreciation occurs despite a record yield gap between China and the United States resulting from expectations of Federal Reserve rate hikes.

Analysts suggest the central bank's interventions indicate a comfort with a stronger yuan. This shift comes ahead of a scheduled meeting in the United States between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping.
