He is expected to submit his signed resignation to Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad upon Ahmad's return from Thailand. While some reports suggest the departure may be attributed to health reasons, the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party views the move as a means to ensure political stability.

The political climate is further strained by Sheikh Hasina's announcement that she intends to return from exile in India around December to surrender. Hasina faces a death sentence issued in absentia by the International Crimes Tribunal for her role in suppressing protests during the 2024 uprising, charges which she denies. The government's push for Shahabuddin's exit is seen as an effort to consolidate power and remove the last high-ranking ally of the ousted former prime minister.
