AMD Surpasses $1 Trillion Market Valuation Amid AI Rally

Advanced Micro Devices surpassed a $1 trillion market capitalization for the first time on September 21, 2026, as shares hit record highs between $613 and $616. The company became the fourth U.S. chipmaker to reach this milestone, joining Nvidia, Broadcom, and Micron. This surge followed a five-day rally and a single-day jump of approximately 9.4%, contributing to a total stock gain of nearly 190% for the year.

The valuation spike was largely driven by investor optimism surrounding agentic AI, specifically following the launch of Meta Platforms Inc.'s Muse AI agent app, which became the top free application on Apple's App Store. Because agentic AI systems rely heavily on central processing units (CPUs) for planning and code execution, the app's success sparked a broader rally in CPU-focused stocks, including Intel and Arm Holdings. AMD has capitalized on this shift by gaining market share from Intel in the server inference sector and launching the Helios rack-scale AI system.

Financial reports for the second quarter showed AMD's revenue increased 50% to $11.5 billion, with data center revenue more than doubling to $6.7 billion. While AMD has expanded its strategy to offer complete systems combining processors and networking gear to compete with Nvidia, a significant gap remains. Nvidia maintains a dominant market position with a valuation of approximately $5.5 trillion and substantially higher profit margins. AMD's growth is further supported by strategic ventures with OpenAI and Anthropic, as well as a partnership with Meta to build AI infrastructure.
