Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar Promotes Electoral Literacy in Lucknow

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar visited Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, on August 25 and 26, 2026, to promote electoral literacy and democratic awareness. During the second regional conference on Electoral Literacy Clubs (ELC 2.0) and ECINET, Kumar described India's election system as transparent and conducted strictly according to the constitution and law. He noted that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls required both the "guts" of the Election Commission of India and significant cooperation from voters, an exercise he claimed has earned international praise.

On Tuesday, Kumar interacted with Booth Level Officers (BLOs) at the Indira Gandhi Pratishthan. He praised the BLOs for their dedication in managing electoral rolls and described them as the "cornerstone of India's democracy." During this session, he highlighted the scale of the national democratic machinery, noting that the country has approximately 97 crore voters and that the commission becomes the largest organization on Earth during Lok Sabha elections, employing 1.8 crore people.

Kumar urged officials in Uttar Pradesh to increase voter turnout by targeting outreach to young voters and married women. He also encouraged students to familiarize themselves with democratic values as an investment in the future. The visit occurred amid speculation that the upcoming Uttar Pradesh assembly elections may be held earlier than originally scheduled for early next year.
