Gold and Silver Rally as Iran Proposes Selective Blockade

Gold and silver prices surged after Iran proposed barring only hostile vessels from the Strait of Hormuz, though shipping traffic continues to decline.

Spot gold and silver prices rallied on August 6, 2026, with gold rising 4% to US$4,244 an ounce and silver jumping 4.2% to US$61.88 an ounce. The market surge followed reports that Iran proposed barring only hostile vessels from the Strait of Hormuz rather than implementing a total blockade, a move investors viewed as a potential diplomatic off-ramp.

Despite the market optimism, physical tensions in the region remain high. Vessel traffic through the Strait of Hormuz fell to 33 ships between Monday and Thursday, down from 50 during the same period the previous week. Reports indicate Iran may be considering a restrictive regime that would specifically ban United States and Israeli ships while requiring compensation from other nations.

Regional instability has been further compounded by Houthi attacks. The Iran-aligned group struck Saudi Arabia's Najran province, killing 11 civilians, and claimed to hit a Saudi oil tanker in the Red Sea. These events, alongside crumbling traffic in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, have contributed to rising oil prices and heightened global security concerns.
