McDonald's Launches $8.5 Billion Strategy to Reverse Sales Decline
McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski introduced a global business strategy and an $8.5 billion franchisee support plan to combat shrinking U.S. growth and rising competition.
McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski launched a global business strategy titled "McDonald's > Next" to address declining customer visits and shrinking growth in the United States. The initiative focuses on enhancing food quality, service, and operational efficiency to regain market share from competitors, specifically Burger King, which recently reported an 8.5% increase in comparable sales.
To facilitate the transition, Kempczinski announced an $8.5 billion 10-year plan providing franchisees with rent relief and capital support. The company aims to renovate 50,000 restaurants by 2028 while expanding its beverage and chicken offerings and testing AI-driven drive-thru ordering systems.
Despite these investments, the company faces challenges including rising beef costs and tension with franchisees regarding the expense of store upgrades and the execution of frequent menu promotions. These pressures come as Burger King continues to gain ground through its own "Reclaim the Flame" turnaround plan, which involved revamping its flagship burger and overhauling half of its restaurant fleet.
